A native North Carolinian, Betsy Reid began painting at age 14 with Mr. Frith Winslow, a portrait and landscape artist, in Plymouth, North Carolina. She went to theUniversity of North Caroina at Greensboro and got a B.A. degree in Biology (minor in Chemistry) and a M.A. in Ed. from East Carolina University and taught primarily on the high school level, but also on the college level. Her love of painting surfaced again, and resulted in her getting a B.S. degree in Art from East Carolina University. After teaching art on the high school level for some years, she resigned to concentrate on doing her own work.
Betsy Reid's art exhibits strong draughtsmanship with a flair for high contrast. She is an intense and able colorist and paints in all major media, selecting the medium which best compliments her subjects. The genre she paints are as varied as the media she employs which include: wildlife, local and exotic; figures/portraits; florals; scenes and landmarks indigenous to North Carolina; seascapes; and Christian themes. Her studio is in Greenville, North Carolina. |
"Painting is an expression of my love and appreciation for life and most of my subjects are life-forms. Light is intrinsic to my work and I try to capture the way it defines color and form. I almost never paint two consecutive works in the same medium because I so enjoy the differences and look of each one." |
